Wendy - love your comment, I had a good laugh about your very apt description of a certain octogenarian. Boo to the bunny! Who's going to make a sticker or logo with a bunny with a cross over it? Or with an arrow through it?!!!

I am so sick of driving up to our local petrol station (Buninyong Vic) to see all the billboards out the front advertising women (Zoo/Ralph mags) wearing next to nothing. This morning I asked them to take down the current Zoo mag pic because it was over the top, but was told that it is in the contract to advertise the mags out the front of the shop. And the look I got - like I was being a prude! Urrrr. A couple of months ago they did remove the Ralph mag after a few people complained - the pic was outrageous. Bikini clad woman, boobs hanging out everywhere and hand down her knickers. Surely if people want to buy these magazines they can go into the store and get them. We shouldn't have to be confronted with them every time we drive up. And yes, I often tell my 7yr old son that it's what a person is like and not how they look that matters... but I know he and his friends talk about how 'hot' a girl/young woman looks. I feel sorry for all women/girls who are being bombarded with these images.
Very frustrating!!

I saw the 7pm project recently (I don't normally watch it, but I saw the advertised topic). I have been thinking for a long time now that the magazines you see regularly at supermarkets and petrol stations are getting worse. I was relieved to know that I wasn't the only person thinking this! Steve Price, what an idiot! He said his girls don't look at these images on the magazines, well my children do and they are similar ages to his! My 10 year old daughter is disgusted by these images and calls them 'Australian girls' because we see so many young girls imitating these images all the time by wearing push up bras, etc. at such young ages. It must be paedophile paradise in this present climate! I had a guy of about 60 years old nearly fall on to the bonnet of my car recently. I was in the car park of a fast food outlet and he had just come out of the restaurant and caught sight of two young girls (approx. age 12! Who, incidentally came out of the restaurant about 30 seconds before him!) wearing, quite frankly, not much, but they did have on very short shorts and he couldn't take his eyes off of them! He kept walking and starring at them.. right up to the point he came across my bonnet, narrowly missed falling on to it, looked all embarrassed and rushed to his car that was next to mine! Steve Price, you are kidding yourself! Your daughters do see these images and even though they probably will be thinking about how they can make themselves look like these images for boys their own ages (or feeling really bad about themselves because they don't look like these images!), all the older guys will be having a good look at them too! Advertising plays a huge part in perception and fashion. These images are damaging to young minds and not only for girls. Young males will think that their future girlfriends should look like and do the things that these girls supposedly do too. The images are so suggestive.
Plus, you know what? I don't like having to look at other women's scantily clad bodies ALL THE time either and I know my husband finds it embarrassing. We are adults and we are not THAT old or prudes either! We'd just rather look at what we chose to look at than constantly, have the media decide for us! ON top of the fact that we have no choice ourselves, we can't even protect our children from it either! That is NOT freedom or choice! You can't avoid it (for those who will say 'don't look' or 'turn over'). It is out there, larger than life, in your face, EVERY DAY!
My local petrol station has moved the 'magazines' to the back of the shop, this way EVERYONE gets to see who is 'Big and Bouncy' because it is there, directly in your face, as you turn around from the cash desk and walk to the exit at the back of the shop! Just get rid of them from all public viewing places please! Well done, to Catherine for raising awareness on this issue!

As I said before Tony - yeah right! Of course, please feel free to contact each and every magazine publisher/distributer on our behalf to appeal to their sense of duty of care for children. (Like they've shown any consideration to date!) Self regulation has already proven to fail in this industry so personally, I think it would be a waste of time and resources and I'll stick with the current (credible) campaign to change the display laws. However this campaign was set up to enable others to also help effect change, so you go for it if you really think it will work. All the best!

Hi jodie,
For some reason no one got my last post which among other things asked the question ,Has Catherine actually written to the companies involved to ask them to change because in one of her previous posts she had this to say.
"Yeah right Tony! Do you really think the magazine companies that sell this stuff are really going to act at their expense on behalf of our children?! So no, I wouldn’t be surprised at their response."
How can you run a credible campaign without doing the obvious first. At least you will know one way or the other where the companies stand without preempting their response. Who knows they may actually agree.

If you are trying to get a zero tolerance approach by having the sale of porn limited, then what is your opinion of Porn DVD in Video Stores?

This was Tony Klik on 5 April. "On the other hand I dont think I should have to go to an adult shop to buy my magazines when ultimately it is the parents who should be writing to the magazine companies and those that display them to change."

We're doing it Tony, just as you said. Ultimately, we the parents, are petititioning those that make the rules about displaying the magazines to CHANGE!

People whinge and complain that parents these days don't take responsibility for their kids, and then they whinge and complain when we do.

Steven, I'm not sure what you mean by 'not lending it enough credence'. Comments such as yours have been addressed numerous times across this site. No-one is questioning whether or not the contents of women's magazines may affect self esteem etc. We're talking about the exposure of children to pornography. I disagree that seeing the cover of a women's magazine would affect children 'far more negatively' than the cover of a highly sexualised adult publication. It amazes me that you can't (or wont?) see that!
As for your certainty about my dishonesty and that 'hardcore' porn mags aren't sold in petrol stations - you're wrong on both counts there too. Of course some everyday retail outlets do consider their younger customers and don't display these publications at all, however I can guarantee that all of the magazines posted here are exactly as they're displayed in a variety of places.
Removing porn from kids has nothing to do with becoming a 'nanny state' or internet censorship. What I find most disturbing about comments like yours is the inference that there is something wrong with 'protecting children'. What is that all about?!
Anyway, I'm glad you wasted some of your time constructing your comment considering you think this petition is a 'tremendous waste of time and resources'. I guess some of us have nothing better to do than 'think of the children'.

Wow, this whole petition is a tremendous waste of time and resources, way to scapegoat societies problems onto a couple of nudie magazines in a gas station, this has been said over and over again in the comments but you really don't seem to be lending it enough credence, young children do not read these magazines, young girls however do read Cosmo and Dolly, they are effecting children far more negatively than a glance at zoo weekly will. "cum on my braces"? Now I'm sure you're deliberately being dishonest HARDCORE PORN MAGS ARE NOT SOLD IN PETROL STATIONS that's a fact. Not to mention there are far bigger problems concerning Australia at the moment, like, oh I don't know MANDATORY NATION WIDE CENSORSHIP OF THE INTERNET, but what am I thinking you'd probably be in favor of that as well after all we have to protect the children.

Luke, we are trying to get a zero tolerance approach by having the sale of porn limited.

Yes children see women at beaches in bikinis but they are not lying on a bed with their hands down their pants or holding their boobs with their mouths open waiting for some guy to come along that she can pleasure. Get real and open your eyes to reality.

Children know too much too soon and advertising is to blame. You can't drive down the freeway without being asked if you want better sex or have trouble getting an errection. Not necessary.
